About the International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day (May 15)
Our Mission is to increase the knowledge, practice, safety, and love about the transformative intervention called Kangaroo Care or Skin-to-Skin Care. This day serves as a beacon of hope, bringing together families, healthcare professionals, and communities to improve kangaroo care and the quality of life of everyone involved.
Community-Centric Focus: We are imperfect parents, clinicians, and volunteers from every corner of the world, that believe in the strength of community celebration and support for babies and families. Kangaroo Care Day (May 15) is not longer just an event; it's a movement driven by the shared experiences, stories, and dedication of families and clinicians who have embraced Kangaroo Care. Through everyone's efforts in their own communities, our website, the free resources, our Instagram community and the efforts of professionals and families globally, we strive to connect, inspire, and empower individuals on their journey of nurturing infants.
Our Story: Kangaroo Care Day, celebrated annually on May 15th, is a heartfelt tribute to the life-saving practice of Kangaroo Care and its incredible impact on the lives of hospitalized and healthy infants and their families. Inspired by the incredible story of survival of Zachary Jackson, Kangaroo Care Day (May 15) is a global initiative founded in 2011 by his mom, Yamile Jackson, a Ph.D. engineer and passionate advocate for nurturing care, zero-separation, and family centered/integrated care.
📆 Why May 15? May 15th holds a special significance—the birthday of Zachary Jackson, the son of Yamile Jackson, and the inspiration behind Kangaroo Care Day. This date symbolizes the love, resilience, and life-saving benefits that Kangaroo Care represents. Zach will turn 23 years old and is healthy and full of life. May 15th is also the International Family Day, which makes it even more meaningful to celebrate it that day.
Global Impact: Kangaroo Care Day is celebrated worldwide, transcending borders and cultures. Join us in creating a global movement that champions the well-being of newborns and promotes Kangaroo Care as a right and an essential element of health care.
Get Involved: Whether you're a parent, healthcare professional, or someone passionate about supporting infants, there's a place for you in our Kangaroo Care Day community. Celebrate in your unit, follow us on Instagram, share your photos and stories, and create a world where every baby and family receives the warmth and care they deserve.
