To celebrate World Prematurity Day, we are excited to invite parents and clinicians to this free live Q&A session with a renowned neonatologist and sleep expert, Dr. Alice Obuobi.
We want to sincerely thank Dr. Oboubi for her generosity and for sharing her knowledge in this important topic. We had 140 registered from 14 different countries. Stay tuned for the next session with another expert on January, 2022
ABOUT THIS SESSION
Sleep is a biological need. We know that parents have many questions about their baby's sleep practices in the NICU and after the baby gets home so the sleep expert was here to answer them.
Whether your baby is discharged before their due date or has spent months in the NICU, Dr. Obuobi answers questions from the participants that are specific about sleep, which may include:
- What does the evidence say about transitioning to sleeping at home?
- What is therapeutic positioning?
- What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and how it affects NICU babies?
- What is the difference between "back to sleep" and "safe sleep"?
- How can I help my baby sleep safe at home?
- When should I call the doctor?
The session is all Q&A, after a brief introduction from Dr. Obuobi.
Yamile Jackson, PhD and Marie Boone-Clark facilitated this session.
In this free 60-minute interaction, Dr. Obuobi will share her wisdom, the evidence, answer our questions about sleep in the NICU and after hospital discharge, explain the impact of COVID-19, and share how to leverage skin to skin contact to improve sleep at home.
WHO WAS INVITED?
- Parents of babies in the NICU or any hospital unit.
- Parents of babies close to discharge or at home.
- Clinicians that prepare parents in their transition to home.
- Anyone that is curious or interested about infants sleeping at home after hospital discharge.

About Alice Obuobi, MD, MBA, FAAP
“As a Neonatologist, I am grateful that my profession affords me the opportunity to care for premature and sick newborns. I believe strong provider - parent partnership builds trust and improves outcomes for the sickest newborns. Family-centered care provided with evidence based medical practice is always my aim.
When all efforts have been made to ensure that our precious patients survive the NICU stay, I believe that all we should make certain that they are discharged safely to the capable hands of their parents and caregivers. Ensuring safe sleep practices and prevention of sleep related deaths is a passion of mine. With my quality improvement work on improving these practices in the NICU, I show that infants in the NICU can transition from developmental and therapeutic sleep positions to safer sleep practices that can be sustained in the home environment.
I would like to share my experiences and knowledge with you and to learn from you as well.”
